A Late-breaking Translation

This post is an update to After Tragedy, Bureaucracy, in which I discussed a letter describing the travels of my great-grand uncle Peter Lessiack and great-grand aunt Wally Lessiack after the train crash at Kreiensen that took the lives of their mother (my great-great grandmother) Marie Lessiack, and sister Emma Lessiack Keil and her family.

It turns out that I did have a translation that was provided by my ever-helpful friend Maren some months ago–I’m not sure how I missed it earlier, but here it is now.

FatefulTrip 10

Hamburg-Amerika Linie, Department of Person Transport, Wire address: HAPAG Hamburg

Hamburg, August 23, 1923

Hamburg-Amerika Linie, 39 Broadway, New York

Re: Mr. Peter Lessiack

We hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter dated the sixth of this month, to introduce the above-mentioned gentleman. We have done everything possible for Mr. Lessiack. Since the completion of his documents will be delayed, Mr. Lessiack will return on the 30th of this month on the SS Hansa, leaving from Hamburg. Director Bitter has agreed to extend the offer of free crossing from Hamburg to New York in Mr. Lessiack’s cabin.

You will receive an invoice from our main bookkeeping department for the actual costs incurred by Mr. Lessiack and his sister.

Very sincerely,

The translation supports my hunch that my great-grandpa Leo pulled some strings at HAPAG to get his brother and sister to and from Hamburg in the wake of the tragedy, though it’s not entirely clear to me which “Mr. Lessiack” is being referenced in some of the text. Whatever the case, it must have been a grim, sad trip indeed.

Until next time, People.

Terrific! (BTW, I still cannot click on your pictures in order to zoom in. Is it just me? I am not having trouble on my site or on others.)

No, my husband is complaining about it too. I’m trying to troubleshoot it now.

OK, Amy, I think it’s fixed now. The new WP editor does not include that feature, but by tweaking things in the old editor, I was able to make it work. See how you fare and let me know, please. Thank you.

I hate the new editor and have continued using the classic. Now I have yet another reason sticking to the old one. I will go back now and check your post.

Hurrah! Thanks for verifying. The old editor did the linking automatically, but the new ones does not. It’s an extra manual step I need to remember to do.

Just curious—why do you use the new one? I find it very hard to write longer posts in or to post pictures, etc.

I don’t, as a rule. Sometimes it pops up and I just go with it, but when I have a choice, I always go with the old one. I don’t see the new one as an improvement. Also, you can only do the picture linking (that allows the click to enlarge) in the old one. Support told me that the option is not even available in the new one yet. Yet another reason to stick with the old one.

Someone sent me a Tampermonkey add=on that automatically reverts to the Classic Version. I can see if I can find the instructions if you are interested.

OK, let me see if I can find the script or I will ask on the WordPress forum again.

Here’s a link to the article I found that showed me how to add the script so that it always defaults to the Classic Editor. http://diaryofdennis.com/2015/03/24/how-to-force-a-redirect-to-the-classic-wordpress-com-editor-interface/
