When English-major-genealogy-nerds Celebrate Halloween

According to my great-grandmother Mama Helen’s genealogy scroll (which is utterly free of source citations, but great fun to peruse nonetheless), we are descended from Duncan I of Scotland, killed in his sleep by Macbeth at Dunsinore in 1040.

Who knows if it’s true, but it provided a fun jumping off point for our nerdiest impulses to take flight. We went bananas with Macbeth for Halloween this year.

Our weird sisters were six feet tall, and far scarier than this picture makes them look. Grace and I built them out of PVC pipe, chicken wire, garbage bags, burlap, and milk cartons. The cauldron is a blue plastic tub made over with cardboard, duct tape, insulation foam, and spray paint. We used an old recording of Alec Guinness’ Macbeth as the eerie soundscape behind it all. The neighborhood was spooked, and we found out that there are quite a few Shakespeare fans out there.

Happy Saturday, People. I hope you all had a fun Halloween!
