Happy New Year, People
Happy New Year, People. It’s been three weeks since my foot surgery. I started with this enormous dressing– the hose connects to a miraculous recirculating ice machine that is one of the more wonderful things ever invented.
After a week, the dressing downsized to this.
And now, a week after that, it’s wrapped only ankle high. It’s been a chilly winter here in Northern CA, so I made excellent use of the enormous Christmas stocking that my Grandma Katherine Adams Lessiack knitted for me when I was about five years old. Perfect fit.
Along the way I ate waaaay too many of these, a gift from a high school buddy that lives in Hawaii. Better than painkillers, People.
My work colleagues sent me these lovely flowers.
And, my intrepid younger daughter made sure that I got in on the cultural happening of the moment–Star Wars!
I’ve gotten pretty good on my crutches, though I still need a bit of spotting on the stairs. Today is officially the halfway point–the stitches will be removed on Tuesday, and I have three more weeks to go on the crutches. After that, I can begin physical therapy and (I hope) get back to normal life. Somehow this timeline all hearkens to the twelve days of Christmas–six in the old year, six in the new–only much less fun. My dear, sweet husband deserves a medal for putting up with me.
I’ve been trying to put this very sedentary time to good use. As my genealogy nerd friends will know, Family Tree Maker has been discontinued. So, I took this opportunity to transfer all my data over to Roots Magic. I’m still learning the tool, but it seems OK so far (the rather archaic user interface aside). However, I’m eager for a native Mac version rather than the buggy, bridgy thing currently on offer.
My long-time photo tool, Aperture, was also discontinued last year. This seemed like a great time to tackle the enormous job of transferring my archive over to Adobe Lightroom. Again, so far so good, though my archive ballooned to nearly a terabyte in size once I exported everything in a non-lossy format. Getting new backups and a workflow in place has been the work of many days, but I think I’m on solid ground now.
I’ve also been doing a lot of scanning using my wonderful Flip-Pal mobile scanner, a little gift I bought for myself just before my surgery. This nifty device allows me to scan photos that are glued into albums, and because it’s so small, I can do it all lying down or sitting on the couch. I’ve discovered many new treasures in the process that I’ll share in the coming weeks.
I’m not the only family member to have undergone surgery during this holiday season. Two other folks also had major work done, one planned, one not planned. What is it with us, anyway? Here’s to a happy new year free of trips to the hospital, People.

Let me know when you find a good Mac genealogy program. I’m sticking with FTM to the bitter end. Glad you are making good use of your couch time – Scan on!

Wow, quite an ordeal! You poor thing. Glad to see things are improving. These things definitely take time! The Flip-Pal sounds handy. I will have to check it out. Keep soldiering on!!!

Totally worth the money, I promise. I resisted for a long time, and now I wonder why I did. I still have my big flatbed scanner for larger artifacts, but I’ve really appreciated being able to scan from some of the very old albums I have without disassembling them.

My cousin got a kick out of the picture, and then took one of her own to match. I think my Grandma would approve. Truly, it was the only sock that fit at the time, thanks to the enormous dressing I came home with. Happy new year, Sheryl!
