I came across a few more images of my great-grand-aunt Leonor Spielmann/Spellman, the youngest of the Herman and Fanny Spielmann’s eight children. I’m sharing these new finds as well as re-publishing (in rough chronological order) some images from earlier posts; I like to see pictures in context, and it’s fun to watch Leonor grow.
Leonor was born in 1912 and passed away in 1972. She is buried at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, NJ, the same location where my great-grandparents and several other Spielmann family members were laid to rest. I would very much like to visit that cemetery someday.
Like the rest of the Spielmann family, at some point Leonor’s surname shifted from Spielmann to Spellman. Whatever she was called, it’s clear that she was a much-adored child.
My great-great-grandmother Fanny Spielmann, with great-grand-aunts Hilda and Leonor. Date and photographer unknown.
Leonore Spielmann. Date and photographer unknown. There’s something very amusing about this outfit — maybe it’s the belt?
Great-grandmother Margaret, the eldest child, with great-grand-aunt Leonor, the youngest child. Date and photographer unknown.
The back of the photo says, “Bethel Conn, August 1912.” The young woman with Margaret appears in several pictures, but I don’t know her name or relationship to the family. Photographer unknown.
Leonor and Tootsie on the front porch. Someone is peeking out the window on the left; I got my loupe involved and I think it’s either Margaret or Hilda. Date and photographer unknown.
This is the same occasion, judging from Leonor’s headscarf. Margaret is in the foreground, and Lillian smiles out from behind. Date and photographer unknown.
Leonor with her sister, my great-grand-aunt Hilda. Date and photographer unknown. This looks like it might have been taken at the beach. Date and photographer unknown.
The Spielmann family, 1917. One son–possibly Erwin–is missing from this picture. Leonor peeks out from behind Lillian. Photographer unknown.
Back of photo: Coney Island, July 9, 1917. Hilda, Leonor, Margaret, and Wally Lessiack, the niece of my great-grandfather, Leo Lessiack. Photographer unknown.
Here is Leonor again — in pink, and clearly in command of a great sense of style — many years later with the surviving Spielmann siblings. Hilda, Margaret, and Ernst had all passed away by this time.
Front Row: Leonor, Lillian, and Walter. Back Row: Erwin and Gilbert. This photograph was kindly shared by a relative, but I don’t know what year it was taken.
I hope that your weekend was wonderful, People.
What a wonderful collection of photos portraying a childhood. Gorgeous!
