The Benefits of Blogging

Something I’ve been hoping for has finally happened! A member of the Spielmann/Spellman family contacted me through this blog. I’m so delighted. I’d like to say a big thank you to Paul (who I met on ancestry.com) for connecting the dots. It’s lovely to know that this blog has meaning for someone other than myself, and more lovely still to be in contact with a long lost branch of my family.

The individual prefers to remain anonymous (a request I take seriously) so I will say only that she is a grandchild of Herman and Fanny. We’ve been carrying on famously via email, and she was kind enough to share this photograph of the Spielmann/Spellman siblings later in life.

Front Row: Leonor, Lillian, Walter Back Row: Erwin, Gilbert

Front Row, Left to Right: Leonor, Lillian, and Walter. Back Row: Erwin and Gilbert. Photographer unknown, but we think it was taken in the early 1970s.

Based on this photo, we agree that the unidentified Spielmann boy standing on the right in this photo is probably Gilbert. He bears an almost identical expression in both photos. Thanks once again to my daughter Grace for her expert facial analysis–as an artist, she is very good at spotting details that I might miss.

A happy crew at the beach. Great-grandmother Margaret in black in the front row, Lillian in stripes, and Hilda peeking out from behind. Date, location, and photographer unknown.

A happy crew at the beach. My great-grandmother Margaret is in black in the front row, Lillian is in stripes, and Hilda is peeking out from behind. Date, location, and photographer unknown.

I also learned that, as I suspected, Hilda pre-deceased my great-grandmother Margaret in 1950. Margaret passed away in 1953.

I’ll share more history as I learn it, but I wanted to share this delightful turn of events with you all. If any other of my Spielmann/Spellman people are out there, please don’t be shy. I would love to hear from you.

While I’m exceedingly jealous of you, Leslie, still, I can see why you would be so delighted. What a joy to connect, via blog, with distant family! I’m still holding out for that, myself.

Glad to meet another northern California genealogy blogger, by the way. I just found you via Jana’s blog, where she mentioned you in her post today. Looking forward to reading more.
